The Sharp (#)

When a Sharp is placed in front of a note it raises that note by one half-step. For example, place a sharp in front of C, it raises the note by one half-step making it a C#.

The Flat (b)

When a Flat is placed in front of a note it lowers that note by one half-step. For example, place a flat in front of a B, it lowers this note by one half-step making it Bb.
